Subject: Science
Age Range: 12 to 16
Key Stage:
KS3 & 4

Kar2ouche Earth and the Environment covers two areas of scientific theory that have recently undergone rapid changes: our understanding of the Earth itself, and the most important environmental problems facing the world today.

The activities are aimed mainly at Year 6 students, although there are some designed for Year 7 as well as activities that encourage communication between the two years.

The ideas and issues, discussion and role-play activities are based directly on needs identified during extensive research, and address issues such as making new friends, coping with change, and asking for help. They allow students to rehearse situations, anticipate events that might arise and plan how to make best use of their time and resources. By using the computer and virtual role-play, students can deal with situations, ask questions and challenge assumptions safely and in a way that avoids embarrassment and prepares individuals for transition.

The activities are divided into nine units that are linked with the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for PSHE and Citizenship. They integrate class, group and pair discussions with a range of computer activities, and comprise:

Who Am I?
Can You Help Me?
What Can We Find Out?
All About Us
Where Am I?
What's The Time?
What Do I Need?
Would It Help If...?
What Can I Do?

Each Kar2ouche title comes with a comprehensive Teacher Support Pack. This is supplied on CD and, for network site licence editions, in hard-copy format. Additional hard-copies can be purchased separately.

Kar2ouche - Much Ado About Nothing

Publisher: Immersive Education Kar2ouche - Much Ado About Nothing

Subject: English
Age Range: 12 to 18
Key Stage:
KS3, 4 & 5

Kar2ouche Much Ado About Nothing allows students to read between the lines of Shakespeare's comedy of mistaken identity and plot twists, and develop their own interpretations.

There are innumerable ways to interpret and retell the story. Past versions on stage and in film have represented it in a variety of forms - from a farcical, light-hearted, comic crowd-pleaser to something with potentially much more menace - while the Kar2ouche version is set in the American Civil War.

By visualising scenes, students find the language more accessible, deepen their understanding of character and theme, and gain a greater insight into the play's structure.

There are many suggested activities provided in the software, including:

Barebones Much Ado - students create a summary of the narrative, incorporating key quotations and creating memorable visuals to accompany their notes
Class production - pairs of students are asked to capture the main action in a single scene
What happens when? - students open an out-of-sequence summary of the play and arrange the frames in the correct order
Finishing off - students have to complete a partially prepared storyboard comprising some quotations, some modern English summaries and a selection of images, by choosing a style of interpretation and filling in the gaps
Each Kar2ouche title comes with a comprehensive Teacher Support Pack. This is supplied on CD and, for network site licence editions, in hard copy format. Additional hard copies can be purchased separately

Kar2ouche - Music: In2arts Opera

Publisher: Immersive Education Kar2ouche - Music: In2arts Opera

Subject: Music
Age Range: 12 to 18
Key Stage:
KS3, 4 & 5

Produced in association with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Kar2ouche In2Arts:Opera proves that opera can be fun and interesting at the same time. Benjamin Britten's opera, Peter Grimes, is a perfect starting point to show how opera can be a form that spans the Arts and illuminates many issues that are still relevant today, such as financial worries, social exclusion, love, religion and death.

A number of cross-curricular activities stimulate students to use their investigative and creative skills to discover the building blocks and conventions that make up opera. The activities guide students towards creating their own original work, by taking them through composing and performing their own operatic conventions, painting their interpretations of the music, role-playing the main characters and reflecting upon different points of view.

The six musical activities cover:

Why do we sing?
The role of the chorus in Peter Grimes
Aria, recitative and duet
The jigsaw
Overtures and interludes
Peter's soliloquy
The 17 suggested activities are fully mapped to the National Curriculum Key Stage 3 for Music, English, Art, Drama, PSHE, Geography and History.

Each Kar2ouche title comes with a comprehensive Teacher Support Pack. This is supplied on CD and, for network site licence editions, in hard copy format. Additional hard copies can be purchased separately.

Kar2ouche - Natural Selection & Genetics

Publisher: Immersive Education Kar2ouche - Natural Selection & Genetics

Subject: Science
Age Range: 12 to 16
Key Stage:
KS3 & 4

Kar2ouche Natural Selection and Genetics starts with Darwin's voyage on HMS Beagle, as he explains his ideas about natural selection, and follows the development of these ideas as they influence other scientists' subsequent theories on evolution and inheritance.

It looks at the controversy caused by Darwin's theory of evolution, and discusses alternative ideas about the origin of life. Mendel presents his work and the discovery of genes, while Crick and Watson explain the sequence of discoveries that led to our modern understanding of the structure of DNA.

Modern, fictional characters are used to present various arguments for and against the use of genetic engineering, cloning and gene therapy. They also represent current debates between creationists and supporters of the theory of evolution, and students are encouraged to use the information provided to formulate their own views on these topics. They can present their ideas by using the characters and backgrounds provided in the storyboard activities, which range from straightforward storyboards to describe a sequence of events, to constructing an encyclopaedia entry or a television interview.

Each Kar2ouche title comes with a comprehensive Teacher Support Pack. This is supplied on CD and, for network site licence editions, in hard-copy format. Additional hard-copies can be purchased separately.

Kar2ouche - RE: Learning from Religion

Publisher: Immersive Education Kar2ouche - RE: Learning from Religion

Subject: Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
Age Range: 12 to 16
Key Stage:
KS3 & 4

Kar2ouche Learning from Religion gives students the opportunity to learn from religion by investigating the diversity of different faiths and considering their own beliefs and values. As they develop their understanding of unfamiliar religions, they will discover a number of shared beliefs, values and practices.

Many of the themes for discussion are sensitive and potentially uncomfortable, especially if they are to be performed in front of peers. However, by using the computer and virtual role-play, students can deal with situations, ask questions and challenge assumptions in a less personally threatening or embarrassing way.

Suggested activities offer examples of just some of the ways in which Kar2ouche Learning From Religion can be used in the classroom to encourage students to analyse, interpret, consider and evaluate religious issues, and to develop their own sense of identity and belonging as citizens.

There are three units that provide a range of suggestions for using the software to address the following issues:

Religion in the Media - considering the potential impact of the media on religion
Religion and the Environment - exploring responsibility, stewardship and religious attitudes to conservation
Religion and Forgiveness - looking at religious attitudes to forgiveness and the effects of this concept

Each Kar2ouche title comes with a comprehensive Teacher Support Pack. This is supplied on CD and, for network site licence editions, in hard-copy format. Additional hard-copies can be purchased separately.

Publisher: Immersive Education Kar2ouche - RE: Understanding Religion

Subject: Religious Education
Age Range: 7 to 11
Key Stage:
KS2

Kar2ouche Understanding Religion gives students the opportunity to learn about - and from - religion, by encouraging them to investigate the diversity of different faiths while considering their own beliefs and values.

They are asked to analyse, interpret and evaluate a wide range of issues from different religious perspectives, and to develop their own sense of identity and belonging as citizens. As they develop their understanding of unfamiliar religions, they will discover a number of shared beliefs, values and practices within and between religions.

By using the computer, students can deal with situations, ask questions and challenge assumptions in a less personally threatening or embarrassing way.

There are five units - each divided into four activities - covering Christianity and one other faith:

How do religions remember?
How do faith communities help people to feel involved?
What is the role of places of worship?
How are people inspirational?
How are religious ideas expressed through symbols?
The activities introduce the concepts and relate them to the students' own experiences, then develop these concepts in relation to particular faiths. Finally, they provide space for students to reflect on what they have learnt. A suggested extension activity provides structure to research an additional faith.
